What is an "American Corgi"?? They were created by initially crossing a Cardigan Welsh Corgi with a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Since that initial cross, through careful breeding, focus has been put on carrying forward only the best traits of each breed as well as making it possible to put that beautiful merle coloring onto a more physically Pembroke style dog. Our ideal dog is a bit smaller than the typical "ideal" Pembroke size (which is about 23-28lbs) with a more square build to make back injuries a less prevalent. Most of our American Corgis mature around 16-25lbs. At this time, they are considered cross-bred, but there are some strides being taken to move forward with them being established as a recognized breed.
Our American Corgis we own and produce have DNA test as purebred Pembrokes, so they are genetically almost entirely Pembroke at this stage, but they do still carry some of the wonderful more calm and laid back Cardigan attributes. They are still outgoing and friendly, goofy and fun-loving like a Pembroke, but they are generally a bit more laid back, usually easier to handle, especially for less experienced dog owning families and tend to be less "bossy" than most Pembrokes. We have been told numerous times by Pembroke experienced families who have purchased one of our American Corgi pups that their puppy is "like an improved version of a Pembroke" - which is exactly our goal. Another family who had owned multiple Pembrokes prior to purchasing an American from us said they will only own our American Corgis from now on. There's no shortage of opinions available across the internet about American Corgis (which many breeders do try to sell as "merle Pembrokes") - most of which are full of blanket statements and claims from people happy to spread misinformation from either side of the argument. If you are looking for a traditional Pembroke coloring, but do not have any corgi (or similar breed) experience - I do strongly encourage you to consider a solid colored American Corgi. They are more beginner friendly due to their less intense personalities. The info available here (this applies to this entire website) was handwritten by me and applies only to Magnolia Creek Corgis and the dogs and puppies we own and produce.
